of all the things i've had to learn as a human being, navigating boundaries was the most difficult.

i remember once sitting with a psychic. i was supposed to be asking psychic kinds of questions but i'm terrible with social graces and something had just happened outside so i asked them... what do you do when someone is just barfing their drama all over you? they said, just excuse yourself.

i asked, but isn't that rude. i mean, they obviously need me (someone)... they asked, don't you need you? bam. it was like a slap across the face. i realized that putting myself in a bad state for the benefit of someone else doesn't actually help either of us!

people who've experienced abuse or trauma often grow up to be co-dependent, or people pleasers... leading to doormat syndrome.
